EPA Lead Guidelines for NH Home Inspections

Lead exposure can harm children and babies before they are born.

You can get lead in your body by breathing or swallowing lead dust or by ingesting soil or paint chips.

Removing lead paint improperly can increase danger to your family.

Children with high levels of lead suffer from:

  • Damage to the brain or nervous system
  • Behavior and learning disabilities
  • Slowed growth
  • Hearing problems
  • Headaches

Adults suffer from:

  • Difficulties during pregnancy
  • Reproductive issues in men and women
  • High blood pressure
  • Nerve disorders
  • Memory and concentration issues
  • Muscle and joint pain

Federal government banned lead based paint from housing in 1978. Peeling, chipping and chalking lead based paint are most dangerous in high traffic areas such as windows or sills, doors and door frames, stairs, railings, banisters, porches and fences.
