NH Home Inspection Guidelines for Water Inspection Tests

EPA recommends that well owners have their water tested annually.

Young children are particularly susceptible to the effects of high levels of certain contaminants including nitrate and lead.

Acute health effects occur within hours or days of consuming the contaminated water. Drinking water microbes such as bacteria and viruses are the contaminants with the greatest chance of reaching levels high enough to cause health effects. Usually they can make people sick but could be deadly for small children or people with compromised immune systems.

Chronic effects occur after people consume a contaminant over EPA’s safety standards. Examples of these are chemicals (disinfection by products, solvents and pesticides) radionuclides (radium) and minerals (arsenic) and the chronic effects can be but are not limited to cancer, liver or kidney problems or reproductive difficulties.
